Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Define and describe PANDAS/PANS, including the symptoms, diagnostic criteria, and differentiation from other neuropsychiatric disorders.
  2. List three symptoms to consider a potential PANDAS/PANS diagnosis and an example of how to document onset and progression of symptoms to facilitate interdisciplinary communication and expedited appropriate care.
  3. Discuss various evidence-based treatment options including medications, antimicrobial interventions, immunomodulatory therapies, supportive and behavioral interventions.

Course Description

Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) and Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) are pediatric neuropsychiatric conditions that manifest after infections. PANDAS specifically occurs after a Group A Streptococcus (strep) infection, while PANS encompasses a broader range of similar disorders. Symptoms include acute-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), mood swings, tics, hallucinations, eating restrictions and/or sensory sensitivities. Diagnosis relies on a thorough clinical evaluation and specific criteria. However, it is not always clear when to consider medical evaluation for psychiatric symptoms. This symposium will discuss the current research so that families and clinicians can gain knowledge about PANDAS/PANS, including its symptoms, diagnostic criteria, and differentiation from other neuropsychiatric disorders. Working with families with PANDAS and PANS requires an interdisciplinary approach of outpatient professionals and streamlined communication to share accurate information. We will discuss the different aspects of supporting these families and avenues to improve access to treatment and support.
