Contrasts Between Western Worldview and Indigenous Worldview
Sponsored by FPA's Diversity and Cultural Competency Committee
Presented by: Dr. Jeff King, PhD
Virtual Only
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
1. Describe two tenants of Indigenous psychology.
2. Articulate two ways that clinical training is disconnected with Native way of knowing.
3. Identify what attitudes are effective in connecting with clients and explain what kind of conceptual framework is effective in bringing about optimal healing conditions for therapy.
Course Description:
Psychological practice, education, and research are all affected by differences in worldview between Indigenous and Western cultures. Research has demonstrated that there are huge disparities in behavioral health care for people of color, including Indigenous populations. While "adaptations" are offered as remedies for culturally sensitive counseling, the underlying worldview is not challenged for the effects it has on Indigenous clients. This presentation demonstrates how the Western worldview obstructs effective counseling and even causes harm. It further shows how our training programs emphasize the Western worldview and harms both students and faculty of color in academia.
