Course Description

Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions that require prompt recognition and comprehensive care. This course provides a structured approach to understanding and managing these disorders. The session will provide an overview of the DSM-5-TR criteria for eating disorders, offering a foundational understanding of the diagnostic criteria. Next, the session will discuss the prevalence of eating disorders and risk factors that may present due to delayed diagnosis, emphasizing the role of stigma, cultural influences, and healthcare system barriers. Participants will learn strategies for the assessment of disordered eating behaviors, including tools and approaches for gathering a thorough clinical history and conducting physical examinations. Additionally, a discussion of evidence-based treatment options for eating disorders, including psychological interventions, nutritional rehabilitation, and pharmacotherapy will allow for participants to recognize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to care. Strategies for overcoming these challenges and improving outcomes are presented. Finally, a Q&A segment allows participants to engage with the material, clarify concepts, and explore real world applications, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the assessment and treatment of eating disorders.
