Addressing the Mental Health Needs of LGBTQ+ Older Adults (Virtual Only)

Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Define key terminology related to the mental health of LGBTQ+ older adults, including terms related to sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and LGBTQ+ identities.
- Describe the key mechanisms contributing to mental health disparities among LGBTQ+ older adults.
- Identify evidence-based practices and solutions to support the mental health of LGBTQ+ older adults, including culturally responsive care, peer support networks, caregiver resources, and policy advocacy.
Course Description
This workshop will provide an overview of the mental health challenges faced by LGBTQ+ older adults. We will explore how these factors contribute to mental health disparities, including higher risks for depression, anxiety, and dementia. The session will also highlight the role of social support networks and community resources in promoting mental well-being and addressing aging related challenges. Additionally, evidence-based practices will be introduced, including evidence-based care practices and policy solutions tailored to the needs of LGBTQ+ older adults. The workshop will conclude with a question-and-answer session to discuss specific concerns and provide further resources.
