Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

1. Identify recent Florida legislative bills and describe their implications for clinical care practice with gender and orientation diverse youth and adult populations.

2. Differentiate between legal and ethical standards related to working with gender diverse clients, contrasting state, national and international transgender and gender non-binary care standards (e.g., APA, WPATH, DHHS).

3. List Florida mental health resources that specifically serve racial, ethnic, and socioeconomically diverse family populations working on gender and/or orientation family acceptance processes.

Course Description

New Florida laws enacted over the last two years have direct and indirect implications for gender and orientation diverse youth and adult clients and their family members in clinical practice. This session will review legislation therapists can consider through both legal and ethical lenses, referencing state statutes as well as APA guidelines for client care and treatment. Attendees will analyze and discuss hypothetical client vignettes using salient ethical and legal considerations. Participants will also have an opportunity to pose questions and address any knowledge gaps regarding this client population. Florida mental health resources that support racial, ethnic, and socioeconomically diverse family populations in working toward gender and/or orientation family acceptance will be shared.
