Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. List culturally sensitive words utilized in clinical practice with clients and their families of diverse gender and orientation experiences.
  2. Analyze and describe, through the lens of expressive arts therapy, the social, emotional, and psychological impact of gender identity and sexual orientation in the development of children and adolescents.
  3. Demonstrate how expressive arts therapy tools can be used with gender and orientation diverse clients and their families while incorporating clinical considerations into treatment.
  4. Identify recent Florida legislative bills and describe their implications for clinical care practice with gender and orientation diverse youth and adult populations.


Course Description

This interactive workshop offers an in-depth exploration of culturally sensitive strategies for working with clients and families navigating diverse gender and orientation experiences. Participants can enhance their clinical practice by:


โ— Learning and applying current vocabulary and culturally responsive language critical to supporting gender and orientation diversity.

โ— Analyzing the social, emotional, and psychological impact of gender identity and sexual orientation through the lens of expressive arts therapy, with a focus on children and adolescents.

โ— Exploring creative tools and therapeutic techniques designed to engage and support clients and families in their journey toward acceptance and well-being.


The workshop will also address current legislative updates in Florida that may have implications for clinical care with gender and orientation diverse clients. Participants will also hear from guest speakers with lived experiences who have voluntarily consented to discuss their clinical and family therapy journeys. The workshop will share Florida-based mental health resources tailored to serve racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse families as they seek family acceptance and integration of gender and orientation diversity within their family contexts.
