Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

1. At the end of this workshop the learner will be able to : understand the history of police psychology and describe the behavioral health tools regarding law enforcement suicide prevention and intervention.

2. The learner will be able to identify and explain what peer support is, the importance of it along with the steps in developing an "in-house" wellness program for personnel working in a law enforcement/public safety agency.

3. The learner will also be able to utilize active listening skills along with having a clear understanding of the positive psychology principles involved in fostering resiliency for public safety professionals. that can provide a framework and consideration for a behavioral health model for other public safety agencies/departments abroad.

Course Description

This course provides a template for developing a wellness program for law enforcement and public safety agencies, nationally and internationally inclusive of an "in house" peer support team and a licensed psychologist proficient and conversant in police and public safety psychology. This course will address suicide prevention and intervention, how trauma can impact a law enforcement professional in particular and their respective family members along with the addressing the importance and buffering effects to trauma via cultivation from the combination of resiliency skills, peer support, and behavioral health services. The History of Police Psychology and the infrastructure of how we got here will be discussed along with the use of active listening skills for fostering trust within the subculture and cultivation of resiliency skills (via positive psychology and CBT principles) are significant areas that can provide a framework for departments, agencies, peer support specialists, and behavioral health clinicians abroad.
