Course Description
All too often headlines identify a horrific violent attack ending with the tragic loss of life at a school or public gathering place. School shootings (Sandy Hook Elementary School, Columbine High School, Virginia Tech University) have occurred to such a level the need for prevention has become a major focus. The Preventing School Violence CE is a partnership between the Florida Psychological Association and the US Secret Service, National Threat Assessment Center. The CE will be divided into three parts. 1) Background history, rationale, latest evidence-based research of mass shootings and school violence, 2) Presentation of the US Secret Service Threat Assessment program including 16 minute video, school management phase, discuss Pathway to Violence, risk-factors (race, age, ethnicity, gender, SES), and warning signs, and 3) Action steps for professionals from developing threat assessment capabilities as well as how to assist schools with implementing the mandated threat assessment.
Approved for 2 hours of general continuing education credits
