Building Bridges: Enhancing LGBTQ+ Affirmative Collaborative Care for Youth

Participants will be able to:

1. Describe LGBTQ+ affirmative care and its importance in supporting youth.

2. Identify challenges and barriers LGBTQ+ youth face in accessing services across different systems.

3. Describe the roles and responsibilities of various disciplines involved in collaborative care for LGBTQ+ youth and discuss strategies to improve communication and cooperation between mental health, medical, educational, and juvenile justice sectors.

Course Description

This workshop is designed to equip professionals across various disciplines with the tools and knowledge needed to provide affirming, comprehensive, and collaborative care to LGBTQ+ youth. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ young people in accessing supportive services, the session will explore effective strategies for creating an inclusive environment that fosters positive mental health outcomes and overall well-being. Participants will learn about the interdisciplinary nature of collaborative care, emphasizing the importance of integrating services across mental health, medical, educational, and juvenile justice systems. The workshop will provide actionable insights into connecting with the medical side of treatment, ensuring that LGBTQ+ youth receive holistic support that respects their identity and meets their diverse needs.

Providing Culturally Humble and Affirming Mental Healtcare to LGBTQ+ Youth and Individuals

3. List three ways to incorporate LGBTQ+ affirmative skills in clinical practice.

Course Description

LGBTQ+ youth and individuals experience negative physical and mental health outcomes secondary to identity-based oppression and discrimination experienced in daily life (Eisenberg et al., 2019). Research shows that LGBTQ+ affirmative care and other support often mitigate poor health outcomes (McDermott et al., 2021). By using a culturally humble framework and evidencedbased treatment interventions, participants will be able to provide LGBTQ+ affirming assessment, evaluation, and treatment of LGBTQ+ youth and individuals.

The Legal Landscape for Transgender Medical and Menthal Health Care in Florida

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

1.Discuss the laws, rules/regulations, and policies impacting access to and provision of gender-affirming medical care in the state of Florida, as well as the litigation challenging the discriminatory bans and restrictions on gender-affirming care.

2. Apply their knowledge of the new hostile laws to navigate and provide affirming, high-quality services to transgender patients and families.

3. Demonstrate their ability to educate and advocate for their patient by identifying resources (e.g., legal support, medical providers, community organizations) that can assist transgender clients and ensure high quality referrals for their patients/clients in the current legal landscape

Course Description

Educate mental health professionals on the current legal landscape for the provision of gender-affirming healthcare to transgender individuals in the state of Florida; update mental health professionals on the rights of providers and patients, and potential areas of liability; and equip mental health professionals with the ability to provide the most affirming and high quality care to the transgender community.
